Recently, the Shaanxi province government announced the decision on the Shaanxi Provincial Science and Technology Awards of the year 2023. The research program "Research and Application of Pathogenic Mechanism and Comprehensive Prevention and Control Technology of Wheat Yellowing and Dwarfing Diseases" led by Prof. Wu Yunfeng from our college has won the first prize for Science and Technology Progress Award of Shaanxi province.

This research focuses on the serious harm and difficult prevention of wheat yellowing and dwarfing diseases. It has conducted systematic and in-depth research on pathogen identification and monitoring, disease epidemic laws, virus pathogenicity and insect transmission mechanisms, exploration and breeding of disease-resistant germplasm resources, development of pesticides and formulation of prevention and control regulations. The research has clarified the types of pathogens, population structure, and genetic diversity of wheat yellowing and dwarfing diseases, established a disease prediction model based on occurrence conditions, and explored the pathogenic mechanism of wheat yellowing and dwarfing diseases. It has also analyzed the insect transmission mechanism of wheat yellowing and dwarfing diseases, cultivated disease-resistant varieties, developed antiviral drugs, and established a comprehensive prevention and control system centered on "planting disease-resistant varieties, sowing with dressed seed in autumn, controlling aphids to prevent diseases, and protecting the fields through targeted measures in spring". This research achievement has solved the core technical bottlenecks such as the lack of pathogen detection, disease prediction and forecasting, disease-resistant varieties, and prevention and control agents for wheat yellowing and dwarfing diseases, and achieved technological breakthroughs. After years of development and demonstration, the achievements have effectively controlled the outbreak and epidemic of such diseases in China, and achieved huge economic and social benefits.
