On July 10th, 2023, Dr. Huang Shuo, a postdoctoral researcher in the College of Plant Protection, NWAFU, gave an academic report titled "Progress in Mapping and Cloning of Wheat Multi-resistant Loci Yr30/Sr2/Lr/Pm/Sb and Functional Verification and Mechanism Analysis of Rust-resistant Secretory Peptide TaCSP4" in the conference hall of the National Key Laboratory of Arid Crop Stress Biology. The report was hosted by Associate Professor Zeng Qingdong from Plant Pathology Department, and more than 30 students and teachers from the College of Plant Protection and the College of Agronomy attended.

Wheat, as a major food source, provides about 20% of the calories for humans. However, wheat faces various biotic and abiotic stresses during its growth. Among them, wheat stripe rust can cause the most destructive harm, seriously threatening the national food production safety. The most economical and environmentally-friendly controlling strategy is to identify resistance genes and plant resistant varieties. Dr. Huang first introduced the use of genetic, bioinformatics, and molecular biology research methods to construct near-isogenic lines of P9936/Mingxian 169, Yaco "S"/Mingxian 169, Xingzi 9104/Avocet S, and conducted fine mapping and cloning of adult-stage multi-resistant loci Yr30/Sr2/Lr/Pm/Sb on their short arms of chromosomes. The function of the Yr30 candidate gene was identified, which will lay a foundation for revealing the mechanisms of multi-resistance, gene rational distribution, and disease control for multiple diseases. Finally, the function verification and preliminary disease resistance mechanism of wheat stripe rust resistance gene TaCSP4 were explained.

Dr. Huang graduated from the College of Agronomy of Northwest A&F University in 2021, with a doctor's degree. His supervisor is academician of CAE, Professor Zhensheng Kang, and his main research direction is the genetic mapping, cloning, functional verification, and mechanism analysis of wheat disease resistance genes. He is currently leading a postdoctoral scientific fund project and has published four articles as the first author in journals such as Theoretical and Applied Genetics, Plant Disease, and Phytopathology.
